Quality of Student Body

Cal Poly is renowned for the quality of its student body. Fall 2006 was the twelfth straight year the university experienced a record applicant pool: over 31,000 applications for 4,500 available spaces. Freshmen enrolled for the Fall 2006 term had an average high school GPA of 3.70, average ACT score of 26 agnd average SAT score of 1195.

When they graduate, Cal Poly students are employment-ready, which is why, for the past decade, 92 to 96 percent of Cal Poly students are either working full-time or attending graduate school within one year of graduation. In fact, by the time they earn their degree, 95 percent of Cal Poly’s engineering graduates are employed in their field or entering grad school.

"Having hired many engineering graduates during my 12 years at Cisco Systems, I noticed it was the Cal Poly engineers who began contributing almost immediately. They were very product/results-driven, and knew how to manage projects and build prototype systems, minimizing their ramp-up time. It's clear that the hands-on, practical focus of the Cal Poly curriculum enabled their quick ramp-up. This significantly contributes to any company's time-to-market efforts and is a critical competitive advantage in today's challenging market."
