Research Centers and Institutes

Cal Poly is the home of numerous research centers and institutes dedicated to advancing innovation and knowledge in specific fields and industries. These centers and institutes provide services to private companies through contract research and development, consulting, and specialized training courses and workshops.

In addition, many of the centers and institutes maintain Web sites and publish newsletters to keep businesses up-to-date on key developments in the industry.

Cal Poly’s research centers and institutes include:

  • Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CAD Research Center): The CAD Research Center concentrates on the development of integrated decision support systems for the solution of complex problems using a collaborative, multi-agent approach.
  • Dairy Products Technology Center (DPTC): Funded by the dairy industry, the DPTC works to support the maintenance, growth and continued economic health of the industry through instructional courses, R&D and technology transfer.
  • Electric Power Institute (EPI): Established in 1971, The EPI serves as an interface between the university and the electric power industry and also serves as a center for electric power oriented activity within the University.
  • Environmental Biotechnology Institute (EBI): Founded in 1995, the EBI works to develop and apply biological tools to address environmental concerns and discover new resources through collaborative interdisciplinary research and education.
  • Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC): Housed in the BioResource and Agricultural Engineering Department, the ITRC enhances the strong irrigation teaching program at Cal Poly through outside activities in training and research.
  • Renewable Energy Institute: The Renewable Energy Institute promotes teaching, research and development in solar and renewable energy technologies.
  • Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI): This organization promotes the study of graphic communication technology and management, and participates in education, research, testing, and product evaluations through interrelated programs involving faculty, students, and experts from the profession.
